Chinese chess, or xiangqi, is a two-player Chinese board game in the same family as Western chess. Xiangqi is played on a board that is 9 lines wide by 10 lines long. In a manner similar to the game Go, the pieces are played on the intersections, which are known as points. The vertical lines are known as files, while the horizontal lines are known as ranks.

The pieces are flat circular discs, each identified by a Chinese character in the team colors, typically black (sometimes another dark color) and red. The pieces start in the position shown in the below diagram.

4.5cm wooden pieces are highly recommended. Its diameter is 4.5cm and can fit almost any board very well. Most of them are made of birchwood and always come with a plastic board in a paper box including 32 wooden disc pieces.

If you prefer premium pieces, Ebony pieces or Green Palisander pieces maybe the best choice. Ebony is one of the few woods that will actually sink in water, so it makes heavy chess sets! And the Green Palisander pieces come with woody fragrance. It’s better to buy a wonderful chess board together for these special pieces.
